City Awarded Grant Funding for Reconstruction of Main Street

The Transportation Commission of the South Dakota Department of Transportation voted just before noon today to award Community Access Grants to seven South Dakota communities, with Freeman being one of the seven. The commission received requests from 27 applicants & was able to distribute $3.9 M in funding for requests totaling $15.6 M. The maximum amount of $600,000 was requested & awarded to Freeman, Lemmon, Wall, Corona, & Kennebec. Canistota received $550,000 of their $600,000 request & Miller received their full request of $387,700.

Special thanks to the South Dakota Department of Transportation & the South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development for their recommendation to make this funding available. Thank you also to Planning & Development District III for work on the City of Freeman’s application and to project engineer Paul Korn & his team at Sayre Associates for their detailed work in designing the reconstruction plan for Freeman’s Main Street.

The project is intended to span Freeman’s Main Street from North County Road to Fifth Street & also include Railway. Bid alternates will encompass a total of four additional blocks; specifically, that includes the portions of both Third Street & Fourth Street that run one block to the east & one block to the west of Main Street.
